Architectural drawings, 1950-1992.

The collection contains architectural plans, perspectives, sketches, and a few photographs. Included are plans for residences, churches, public buildings, and historic preservation projects from McHugh's thirty-five years of practicing architecture in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Most of the designs are for buildings in Santa Fe; other locations include Taos, Los Alamos, and Albuquerque. Work by John W. McHugh, his partners Van Dorn Hooker and Bradley P. Kidder, and staff of his various architectural firms is included representing 231 different projects. Plans for the Santa Fe Opera theater date from the designs for the first theater drawn in 1956 through a proposed but unbuilt roof extension for the replacement theater dated 1985. Historic restoration projects include the mission church at San Ildefonso Pueblo and St. Augustine Church, Isleta Pueblo.

John W. McHugh graduated cum laude from the School of Architecture, University of Notre Dame in 1941. He served as a planner in the U.S. Army Air Force, then spent time studying and traveling in Europe and teaching at Notre Dame. In 1946 he moved to Santa Fe and joined John Gaw Meem's architectural firm. His first private practice was in partnership with Van Dorn Hooker, beginning in 1955.
